The word “Bay Bridge” itself is very interesting as it reflects the difficulties to make possible the word ” Bay bridge” in reality. Bay means a part of sea water which is surrounded by land on three sides and open on one side. So the bay bridge is such a bridge that connects the two edges of a bay. San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge
This bridge is one of the very famous bridge, known as a bay bridge. It is one of the long span full in the United state. The bridge has two section near about of equal length. The older western section that connects San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island is officially known as the Willie L. Brown Jr. Bridge. and the newer unnamed eastern section connects the island to Oakland. The bridge carries 240000 vehicles a day on its two decks. The bridge was designed by Charles H. Purcell and was built by American Bridge Company. It was opened on 12 Nov. 1936, 6 months before Golden Gate Bridge. On its upper deck, it generally carried automobile traffic and trucks and trains ran on the lower deck, but after the close of the key system Transit lines, the lower deck was converted to road traffic as well. The Bridge was unofficially dedicated to James Rolph in 1986.during the year 1989, in Loma Prieta Earthquake, A section of eastern span’s upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck and the bridge was closed for a month. Reconstruction of the eastern section of the bridge as a causeway connected to a self-anchored suspension bridge began in 2002. as per the report, the new bridge was opened on 2nd Sept 2013 with a cost of over $ 3.5 billion. The entire bridge was fabricated using hot steel rivets which are impossible to heat treat and the whole bridge must remain relatively soft always. Holding a great history of plan, design, construction and reconstruction, the bridge is one of the great attraction of California rather of United state. Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel or the CBBT is a 23-mile long fixed connection that crosses at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay in the U.S. State of Virginia. The bridge links Northampton County on the Delmarsa Peninsula with Virginia Beach, a part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This is one of only ten bridge-tunnel system in the world. Since the day of opening, more than 100 million vehicles has been crossed through this CBBT. The Bridge-Tunnel, financed by toll revenue bonds, was opened on April 15, 1964.In August 1987, it was officially named The Lucius J. Kellem Jr. bridge-tunnel after one of the civic leaders who had worked hard and long for its development and operation. Though, it is known the best as Chesapeake Bay Bridge generally by the people. From 1995 to 1999, at an amount of almost $200 million, the capacity of the above water portion was increased to four lanes.An upgrade of the two-lane tunnels was proposed but has not done yet. In 2002, a joint legislative Audit and Review Commission Study commissioned by Virginia General Assembly concluded that” given the inability of the state to fund future capital requirements of the CBBT, the District and Commission should be retained to operate and maintain the Bridge-Tunnel as a toll facility in perpetuity”.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
As per the Guinness World Record, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is declared as the World’s longest bridge over water. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is a 26.7 km(16.6 mi) long roadway in eastern China’s Shandong Province, which is a part of 41.58 km Jiaozhou Bay connection project. This bridge is also known as Qingdao Haiwan Bridge. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge reduces the road distance between Qingdao and Huangdao by 30 km in comparison with the expressway along the coast of the bay. As it reduces the distance, the travel time automatically becomes short by 20 to 30 minutes. There are 450000 tons of steel and 2.3 million cubic meters used for the construction of the bridge and it is designed to be able to withstand severe earthquakes, typhoons, and collisions from ships. And it is supported by 5238 concrete piles. At the entrance and exit point, the bridge is of T-shape. The Jiaozhou Bay Bridge has three navigable sections- 1 is the Cangkou Channel bridge to the west, the second is the Dagu Channel bridge to the east and the third one is the Hongdao Channel bridge to the north. The bridge was designed by Shandong Gaosu Group and by taking four years to build with the help of more than 10000 people, it was opened on 30th June 2011 for public to use.
Business Bay Crossing
The Business Bay Bridge better known as the ‘Ras al Khor Bridge’ is on of the newest bridge across Dubai Creek. It was opened to the public in June 2007 with 13 lanes-6 lanes travel from Deira to Bur Dubai while seven go from Bur Dubai to Deira. The location of the Business Bay Bridge is some 1.5 km south of Al Garhoud Bridge near Dubai Festival city and it provides a new road corridor to motorists traveling between Bur Dubai and Deira and to Sharjah, in addition to Emirates Roads and Sheikh Zayed Road with a cost of 800 million dirhams, the bridge was build. The bridge has a huge capacity of taking the load of 26,000 vehicles per hour. The bridge is 1.6 km long and has a maritime channel with a width of 60 meters and a height of 15 meters.
